Radio Frequency

Network equipment like antennas, repeater sites and base stations emit radio waves in order to ensure an extensive and high-quality mobile coverage. Such radio waves are often labelled “radiation”. But, in a health context, it is more precise to discuss electromagnetic fields, which encircle all electronic equipment. Currently there is no scientific evidence that electromagnetic exposure is dangerous to your health.

At DiGi, we are cognizant of the concerns surrounding the issue of electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions. In this regard, DiGi abides by regulations to ensure that our network operates within approved limits, normally within 1% of the international standards, to minimise the risks to surrounding communities. Whenever DiGi installs new network equipment, we follow the electromagnetic exposure guidelines provided by The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

DiGi also participated in the industry driven EMF media education forum that included experts from the Ministry of Health and clarified the facts versus myths relating to EMF from telecommunications towers. As part of our internal process, we continue to monitor concerns and views relating to EMF from towers and alert our internal EMF Response Team to investigate and take corrective measures where relevant.

Radio Frequency (RF) Awareness Workshop

Employees were educated on how to handle health concerns in relation to RF emission, also known as Electromagnetic Force (EMF) emission, on 17 Sept 2007. Invited speakers, Prof. Dr. Ng Kwan-Hoong, Head of the Medical Physics Unit in University of Malaya’s Medical Centre & Head of Radiation Protection Services Unit, and Tn Haji Mohd Yusof Ali, Head of Non-Ionising Department, Malaysian Nuclear Agency, helped to distinguish between the myths and facts about RF emissions from Radio Base Stations and mobile phones.

Additional training was also conducted for employees whose daily work routine require them to work in the vicinity of cellular and microwave antennas, BTS equipment and mobile phones. Current research has indicated there is no proof that links health issues with exposure to EMF emissions. Nevertheless certain Precautionary Principles are being adhered to by DiGi in line with local regulations and international standards to protect DiGi personnel. Among these are proper placements of these antennas, safe regions to work in when close to the antenna, and SAR values from transmitting devices.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones transmit radio waves and create electromagnetic fields as they communicate with base stations. The specific levels depend on the distance to the base station as well as the type of mobile phone.

Even though no harmful effects have so far been documented in research, users may take precautions to limit their exposure, such as:
• Use hands-free equipment when talking on the mobile phone
• Avoiding long calls
• Send SMS/MMS rather than calling.
