Telco one step ahead of competition with unsurpassed and extensive
mobile data coverage in Malaysia
Georgetown, January 14, 2005 - DiGi Telecommunications (M) Sdn Bhd painted Penang yellow as it rolled out its high speed mobile network on the island. The launch was graced by State Exco member Dr Teng Hock Nan at Gurney Plaza, putting the island state on EDGE.
DiGi's high-speed mobile network, riding on its EDGE technology allows for voice, data and multimedia transmission over mobile phones. It was introduced in the Klang Valley eight months ago, in May, 2004. The areas in Penang which will be EDGE enabled include renowned tourist spots such as Batu Feringghi, main Georgetown center, the airport and industrial areas like Bayan Lepas and Butterworth.
DiGi Telecommunications' Chief Executive Officer Morten Lundal said: "DiGi has long enjoyed a leading position in mobile telecommunications, especially in terms of innovative products for data transmission, the fastest growing area of mobile communications. The launch of our high-speed mobile network reinforces our commitment to bringing to Malaysians the most advanced mobile data products and services, allowing for a real time experience of 3G services"
"To date, DiGi's HighSpeed Mobile Network has the widest coverage in Peninsular Malaysia. It's been very well received in the Klang Valley and we have every reason to believe the people of Penang will be similarly captivated by, and benefit from these services," added Mr. Lundal.
At the launch, DiGi also announced the commercial availability of a new service LifeLogger, which allows DiGi customers to upload multimedia content from the mobile phone to a website page via MMS. The multimedia content logged onto LifeLogger can then be shared with an unlimited number of people. These will be accessible to Penangites and DiGi customers nationwide from today onwards.
Other services already available on this network are high speed mobile internet, Mobile TV, Java and multiplayer games, news, financial services, traffic information service and a High Speed Data Package which allows DiGi customers to enjoy unlimited data usage at a flat rate. Using their EDGE-enabled handsets, customers can download videos, send huge data files, take larger picture at higher resolutions and even attach voice or text to these - all on their mobile phones, while on the move.
At the launch, Dr Teng said: "I have no doubt that the capabilities offered by EDGE will enhance the economic environment in Penang, and will act as an added attraction to greater investment. EDGE will complement Penang's already strong IT base to promote it further as the place to conduct high-technology related business and programmes."
"It is DiGi's aim to equip our customers with the latest innovations to experience the latest benefits of mobile technology. We believe the mobile industry can contribute towards an informed society, which in turn will contribute towards the nation's aspirations of becoming fully developed by 2020," said Lundal.
At the showcase scheduled from today thru Sunday, January 16 2005, DiGi is working with various partners for the supply of device, infrastructure and content. Among them are ntv7, Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens.
These services on DiGi's high speed mobile network are also simultaneously made available to DiGi customers in Johor, areas covered here are the city center of Johor Bharu, areas surrounding Skudai and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in the south and Permas in the east.
