Q4.
What’s the difference between 3G, EDGE, GPRS, WAP & Mobile Internet?
a.
3G: refers to the brand new mobile network. Think of it as a better version of 2G. It will provide faster / higher data rates (throughput) compared to the 2G network (EDGE & GPRS).
b.
EDGE: refers to a service enhancement on the 2G network that provides higher data rates compared to GPRS (the default on 2G).
c.
GPRS: refers to a service on the 2G network that provide basic data rates of between 56-114Kbps (like dial-up speed).
d.
WAP: refers to a standard that allows customers to access the Mobile Web from their phones. This means browsing websites built for the mobile phone using a WAP browser. However, WAP is gradually becoming obsolete, as more advanced phones enter the market. Most new phones today are able to access websites you see/use on your PC, and you won’t see a difference.
e.
Mobile Internet: is a term we use in DiGi to refer to browsing / using the Internet on your phone. It refers to things like checking Gmail on your phone, surfing Wikipedia from your phone, etc.
Q5.
What’s the difference HSPA / HSDPA / HSUPA & 3G?
a.
HSPA: (High Speed Packet Access) can be considered as an upgrade of the 3G network that increases the speed of Internet access. HSPA is capable of achieving a theoretical download speed of 14Mbps (HSDPA), and upload speed of 5.8Mbps (HSUPA).
b.
HSPA is a collection of HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) which refers to the download speed, and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) which refers to the upload speed.

a.
This speed (throughput) will vary depending on the customer’s choice of rate plan and handset. Some handsets only support EDGE, and will not be able to get the 3G speeds.
b.
With 3G on your phone, you should be able to surf at up to 384Kbps. EDGE on the other hand allows up to 150Kbps (on average).
Q2.

Part of the reason we want 3G is to be able to remain connected to data while a voice call is ongoing. However, depending on your handset, this feature may not be possible. Some applications may choose to suspend data connections during a voice call. A good example of this is the YouTube application for Series 60 handsets where data connections are suspended when a voice call comes in.
Q3.
Why don’t I see any “speed” improvements with 3G?
