Wow it’s been nearly 4 years since the programme first started and it’s still one of the most unique graduate programmes out there. Anyone who is interested in the CXO apprentice programme must want to take ownership of initiatives and be someone who is a learn-it-all rather than a know-it-all, because you WILL get tons of opportunities in Digi to learn and grow as long as you’re willing to put in the effort. Today, I am currently working in the CEO’s office as part of a team that functions as internal consultants to help develop the company’s strategy and drive transformational projects. So I can honestly say that I’ve had the best of both worlds here in Digi.

Throwback to a few years ago when I was apprentice to the CMO,  my most memorable takeaway was how Digi kept true to the practice of putting customers first. With the exposure from the programme, I witnessed this resonating value in every aspect of decision making in the Marketing Division - from product ideation to sales and more. Today, I manage partnerships and products in the Digital Products and Services department and I always come back to the fundamentals I have learnt as an apprentice. The combination of close mentorship, exposure and an overall encouraging working culture has taught me many valuable lessons which I still hold close today.

The amount of exposure I had to strategy, business and people during the programme was immense. I had the opportunity to travel to another business unit for projects and collaborate with colleagues across Telenor Group. I’ve also learned a great deal from my CXO on leadership and decision making, which was truly invaluable at such an early stage of my career. I’m currently in the Data & Analytics team as an Insights Analyst, where I focus on customer insights generation for personalised marketing. The freedom to try out different projects throughout the year was crucial in helping me find my interests and shape my career path.

One word to describe the programme – Inspiring. Just like many other fresh graduates, I do not know what I wanted to pursue but the CXO Apprentice Programme allowed me to explore beyond my initial expectations. I got to learn from the Chief HR Officer and Chief Digital Officer firsthand, both very experienced and knowledgeable in their respective areas. This boundless exposure steered me across multiple projects where I have to work with major Digi stakeholders. I am thrilled to be able to work in a company like Digi and to have two great leaders to learn from. This is a part of my career journey which will always have a place in my heart, and I will forever cherish it.

Being mentored by a CEO was an indelible experience for a 23-year-old fresh graduate. Some think that mentorship is only meant for advice-seeking, but the 12 months in the CXO Apprentice Program had given me the opportunity to observe the leadership team of a company for close to 1500 employees; and pushed me out of my comfort zone to always explore. 4 years to date, I am currently a scrum master and a communications specialist in the Customer Value Management team in the Marketing division. My experience as the CEO Apprentice in 2016 has made me realize the importance of listening to end users and to always put our customer needs as business priority – which is something I keep in mind till today.

One word to describe the programme – Growth. My CXO Apprentice journey has been of exploration and learning. Initially, I just wanted to discover my strengths. However, this program has delivered so much more. I was given the opportunity to work on several key projects ranging from 5G in Malaysia to change management in Digi. These experiences challenged my perceptions and stretched my abilities, thus giving me a glimpse into the future of not just the country, but also myself. Working under the CCAO, I’ve learnt a lot about the importance of Corporate Affairs as a strategic business enabler. Over several projects, I got to experience Digi’s supportive culture, which is one that encourages individuals to explore.

One word to describe the programme – An adventure. My experience as a CXO Apprentice is unfathomable. The purpose of this journey is to get comfortable with the uncomfortable as you identify your strengths along the way. I had the opportunity to work with the CEO firsthand, which is a lifetime opportunity! I get to observe how a CEO makes decisions and see how a leader lifts others. You don’t have to restrict yourself in a particular area just because you don’t have any knowledge in it. There are always amazing mentors that will guide you in Digi. My apprenticeship really pushed me to go beyond my limits. Go out there and be fearless. Do something daring. Carpe diem!

As a CFO apprentice, I learned that the single most important aspect to being successful is the ability to adapt to change. Halfway through my apprenticeship, Digi saw a change in management, which meant I had the opportunity to receive guidance from 2 extremely successful CFO’s with different styles and realized that all it took was a bit of adaptability. Having said this, this skill was vital when I decided to move over to Business division after my apprenticeship. Currently, I’m the product owner for core mobile products, driving acquisition initiatives and aligning this with revenue targets. The program has allowed me to participate in a variety of different roles and functions, which helped me prepare for this shif.

From Day 1, my mentor supported my personal and professional developments by encouraging me to take on different projects in my scope. On top of that, having a mentor also accelerated my growth as I was exposed to various stakeholder engagements and learned a lot from working in diverse teams. I have never imagined myself pursuing Privacy and Information Management, but I am now conducting training sessions, preparing internal communications and presenting to various stakeholders across the organisation. I enjoy a challenge, which is why I took up the role of a Privacy Officer in Digi. Every day is a learning journey, and I’ve been very fortunate to receive a lot of support from my colleagues.

The most memorable experience I’ve had during my apprenticeship was co-leading a nationwide futsal tournament where I worked alongside other apprentices to ideate, test and execute. Post- apprenticeship, I’m currently working in the Sustainability team, handling what some might refer to as the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Digi. I design and conduct workshops for students across the nation, ideating with partners such as Google and the Ministry of Education to engage the youth, as well as maintaining our Yellow Heart brand. My apprenticeship has accelerated my growth for the working environment, taught me to execute my tasks in an efficient manner, and helped me get a better understanding of the great culture we have here at Digi.
