5th Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools Programme continues to drive awareness on digital resiliency
- Kickstarting the programme with the Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ Video Script Competition
- Seeking valuable insights from 15,000 schoolchildren and teachers through second CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools 2015 Survey
SHAH ALAM, 10 August 2015 - Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) today announced the month-long Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ Video Script Competition, kick starting its fifth series of the CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools Programme 2015. The CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools Programme is a joint initiative carried out together with CyberSecurity Malaysia, Childline Malaysia and the Ministry of Education.
Launched for the first time this year, the Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ Video Script Competition runs from 7th August to 31st August 2015 and is open to all secondary schoolchildren. Participants are required to develop and submit scripts or homemade video of not more than 5 minutes on Internet Safety and Resiliency.
In addition to the competition, Digi will also be conducting another nationwide survey which aims to collate responses from 15,000 schoolchildren and teachers. The CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools 2015 Survey will focus on understanding the various new online risks that our children encounter online as well as their level of Digital resiliency towards these negative experiences.
Last year, Digi carried out its first nationwide survey on internet safety and Digital resilience of Malaysian schoolchildren; National Survey 2014: CyberSAFE in Schools report, themed Safety Net: Capacity Building Among Malaysian Schoolchildren on Staying Safe Online. The 2014 survey studied the several dimensions of internet-related behaviour which includes online safety, cyber-bullying, support networks and personal concerns.
Philip Ling, Digi's Programme Manager for Sustainability, said, "We are committed in enabling the internet for more people in Malaysia and are looking to inspire as well as ensure a family-friendly and safe internet experience for all, especially children by building digital resilience and fostering responsible digital citizenship among them. As part of our 'Empowering Societies' initiative, we at Digi are dedicated in protecting the young ones from the rising risk of cyber threats and look towards encouraging the positive use of the internet."
The Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools Programme 2015 is part of Digi's efforts to improve awareness and empower students as well as teachers with Digital resilience skills to stay safe on the internet. The programme engages teachers and parents to help children learn about safe online practices and positive Digital citizenship through workshops for students and teachers.
Started in 2011 through a series of workshops for students, teachers and parents, the aim of the CyberSAFEâ„¢ in Schools was to empower Bestari ICT educators and teachers nationwide as ambassadors to create further awareness among schoolchildren across the nation.
"Aside from awareness workshops in schools and training teachers, the programme has also attained zero rate calls to the Childline 15999, developed content such as the edutainment video, and has worked with Interpol to block child sexual abuse material sites. We at Digi strive to make the internet a safe environment for everyone", he added.
To date, 80,000 students and more than 5,000 school teachers as well as 1,000 Bestari ICT teachers from over 1,000 schools nationwide have benefited from this programme. This year, Digi targets to engage another 100,000 schoolchildren to create further awareness on online safety.
Participants of the CyberSAFEâ„¢ Video Script Competition stand to walk away with RM2,000.00 as the grand prize winner while RM1,000.00 will be awarded to the first runner-up. The winners will also be given an opportunity to be featured in the Digi CyberSAFEâ„¢ video series, funded by Digi.
