SUBANG JAYA, 29 August 2020 – In conjunction with the nation’s 63rd year of independence, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) celebrates the spirits embodied and shared by all Malaysians, and at the same time inspires patriotism with ‘Kita Buatan Malaysia’ campaign. Despite coming from different backgrounds, cultures and upbringing, Malaysians share similar fabric of values and traits that have been passed on for generations. The determination, resilience, diversity, passion to win and to never to give up that exist in each of us who are ‘made in Malaysia’ are the trademark of being a Malaysian.

These traits that make Malaysians stronger when we come together as one are clearly demonstrated by our local businesses as they fight to survive in these challenging times. To this end, Digi through its ‘Kita Buatan Malaysia’ campaign aims to instill national pride and rally Malaysians to support these homegrown businesses by leveraging on digital technology. Digi is assisting these local brands to extend their reach to more potential customers by giving their businesses an online presence. This is made possible through MyDigi app, Digi’s own digital hub that will connect small businesses to Digi’s 10.6 million strong subscriber base and on Malaysia’s no. 1 e-commerce platform, Shopee’s Buatan Malaysia dedicated microsite.

Digi’s Head of Marketing Services, Bernard Lee said that every decision to buy local is a choice to support and trust the brands that have come to life in our own backyards. “In line with this year’s Merdeka theme of Malaysia Prihatin, and the ‘Kita Buatan Malaysia’ spirit we want to honour our homegrown businesses who have all persevered in these uncertain times and support their business by bringing them onto the online sphere. By helping to digitalise their businesses, we are providing them the opportunity for their brands to be discovered by new customers across Malaysia and other parts of the world without having to invest in an online presence,” he added.

“We hope that by fostering a collaborative spirit and curating this digital platform designed for local brands, Malaysians will reignite their patriotic pride and support the businesses that make up the colourful fabric of our nation.”

Partnership with Shopee for local SME spotlight
This campaign will culminate with the Shopee x KPDNHEP x Digi Buatan Kita online sale, the largest local products sale in Malaysia featuring local brands on 16 September 2020. The sale which features curated homegrown brands will offer exclusive discounts and free shipping vouchers throughout the campaign period starting today to 16 September 2020 to help Malaysians get more value with every Ringgit that they spent.

Shopee’s Regional Managing Director, Ian Ho welcomed Digi’s partnership as the e-commerce platform believes in the need to bring Malaysians together to support homegrown brands and purchase locally made products. “This is our second year running the Buatan Malaysia Campaign on Shopee. Earlier in July 2020, we launched the campaign with 11,500 products but in just one month, the assortment has grown to over 26,000 products. These are good quality products ranging from Halal-food to home appliances, motorcycles, clothing, cosmetics and more. As Malaysians’ uphold the Malaysia Prihatin theme this Merdeka, we hope that they would also be discerning in their choices when they shop. We call on Malaysians to join Shopee, Digi, and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs in thinking, choosing and buying Malaysian-first.”
