Digi Collaborates with Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 Jane Teoh to Combat Cyberbullying

SUBANG JAYA, 05 November 2018 - Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) has joined forces with Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 Jane Teoh to fight cyberbullying.  This collaboration is part of the Digi’s Yellow Heart initiative that aims to strengthen digital resilience and fostering digital citizenship among young Malaysians through awareness campaigns and cybersafety workshops.

Digi together with the reigning Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, Jane Teoh kickstarted this collaboration with a series of cybersafety awareness talks in schools in Klang Valley and Penang. At these workshops, Digi’s Head of Sustainability, Philip Ling shared some tips on safe online practices and how the children can recognise potential cyber risks while Jane, through her own experience gave them an emotional insight into what it is like to be cyberbullied and how she conquered it.

"Digi has been a strong advocate in our fight against any cyber threats. We are committed to keep children safe online as shown through the many awareness programmes as well as collaborations that we have with various partners and experts since we embarked on this journey seven years ago.  It is important that the children understand the different digital risks such as cyberbullying and the harm and pain which may result from it, know how to safeguard themselves," said Philip.

21-year-old Jane is also an advocate of her own cyberbullying awareness campaign ‘#DareToShout’, which was conceptualised in early August this year and is now extending her reach to a wider audience through this partnership with Digi.  This year-long partnership will see Digi and Jane collaborating on some exciting cybersafe awareness activities with schoolchildren across the nation.

"Cyber bullying is a topic close to my heart and I am humbled to share my experiences with the youth. It is very important that these young people have an avenue for such discussions and to share it with their friends, so they can effect change wherever they may be," Jane said.

The cybersafe awareness talk started two weeks ago, and to-date, Jane has visited three schools each in Kuala Lumpur (SMK Bandar Sri Damansara, SMK Methodist Boy Kuala Lumpur and SMJK Kwang Hua) and Penang (SMJK Jit Sin, SMK Convent Light Street and Penang Chinese Girls High School).

Previously, Digi's Yellow Heart had initiated discussions on cyber safety and awareness on responsible internet usage through two events – Youthtalk, which was a collaboration with UNICEF Malaysia; as well as the CyberSafe in Schools series, which saw school children learn about the importance of being safe on the internet.
