DiGi donates RM568, 000 to Telenor Fund for Pakistan
Employees to also chip in through online salary deduction
Kuala Lumpur, 14 October 2005 - DiGi is donating US$150,000 (RM568, 500) towards helping the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan.
The money will be channelled through the Telenor group, which is driving the global humanitarian effort by Telenor affiliates, with the cooperation of the Norwegian Red Cross.
In total, Telenor companies are pledging 5 million kronor (about RM2.9 million).
DiGi's cash donation is a continuation of DiGi's campaign to do what it can to help not only the victims but also their loved ones, relatives and friends.
Today, DiGi launched its online donation for employees to contribute by salary deduction using the company's HR Management System. In compliance with employment laws, this facility is only open to staff earning above RM1, 500 a month.
The collected donations will be sent in addition to the Telenor group initiative.
On Tuesday, DiGi donated 10,000 DiGi Prepaid SIM Packs to the Pakistan High Commission for distribution to Pakistan nationals in Malaysia so that they can be in touch with their loved ones back home in the aftermath of Saturday's earthquake. They were received by H.E Talat Munir, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Malaysia.
"The tragedy in Asia has been drawn closer to us since Telenor has many employees in the region and our heart goes out to the victims in Pakistan. The country will no doubt be greatly affected and it is important that we all should do our utmost to help," said Telenor CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
DiGi's Corporate Affairs Director Tunku Alizakri R.M. Alias said: "In times like this there is a greater need for us to support each other in any way we can. By donating the preloaded SIM packs, we want to be able to help people wanting to reach their loved ones back home and to offer support."
