DiGi-eHomemakers Partnership Enhances Communications with Underprivileged Women and NGOs

SHAH ALAM, 12 MAY 2011: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") today announced a partnership with eHomemakers to enable a mass messaging solution that will improve connectivity and communications between eHomemakers and up to 40 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and micro enterprises under the eHomemakers umbrella.

Over the next 2 years, DiGi will provide up to 30,000 SMS-es per month for free for eHomemakers to communicate with its members under its Distributed Work Management Application (DWMA) solution - a PC-to-mobile collaborative marketing tool that enables eHomemakers to efficiently manage a network of home-based entrepreneurs.

DiGi's Head of Corporate Affairs, Zaiton Hj Idrus said, "This collaboration is part of the company's ongoing corporate responsibility intent to help marginalised communities by empowering them with mobile or internet connectivity. eHomemakers is an organisation that we feel particularly stands out in its use of mobile technology as a means to improve the living standards of marginalised communities. To the credit of eHomemakers, the DWMA is a great example of how the power of technology is being utilised to help single mothers or other individuals who run home-bound businesses expand their opportunities for economic advancement."

eHomemakers is a social enterprise that promotes working from home, teleworking, and the running of Small Office and Home Office businesses by low income families and single mothers through the use of information communications technology (ICT). It was set up to promote economic self-reliance among women in Malaysia where less than 50% of Malaysian women are employed, despite having higher literacy and secondary school graduation rates compared to Malaysian men.

Chong Sheau Ching, executive director of eHomemakers said, "DWMA helps NGOs to conduct timely and frequent communications with its members, volunteers and beneficiaries. SMS offers an alternative communication channel which is low cost and efficient for participants who are home-bound or on-the-go."
