  • While peer pressure can oftentimes be viewed as a negative, Digi has turned this around to empower schoolchildren to inform their peers and community that ''Cyberbullying is not cool''
  • Now in its third year, Digi CyberSAFE in Schools Be Smart, Use Heart Video Challenge 2017 is a partnership with MOE and CyberSecurity Malaysia to nurture digital resilience (Be Smart) and empathy (Use Heart) amongst Malaysian schoolchildren

SHAH ALAM, 7 October 2017 - Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("Digi") continues to empower Malaysian schoolchildren to make a positive impact on a social issue that has garnered consistent headlines both locally and around the world with the recent launch of this year's Digi CyberSAFE in Schools Be Smart, Use Heart Video Challenge.

The 'Be Smart, Use Heart' video contest is open to all Malaysian primary schoolchildren from Year 1-6 and secondary schools from Form 1 to Form 6 under 3 categories; Primary Schools, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary. This year's competition is currently ongoing and will come to a close at noon on Nov 10, 2017.

One key finding from the Digi CyberSAFETM 2017 Survey is that cyberbullying victims do not know how to reach out to their peers and community for support. In the survey, 37% of 96 undergraduates aged between 18 to 20 did not talk to anyone for help when they encountered such an incident. Victims often feel alone and that no one is able to understand what they are going through or help them. When these victims take adverse action, loved ones, families and communities are affected.

This need not be the case. Digi, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and CyberSecurity Malaysia has worked relentlessly over the past 3 years to empower schoolchildren to inform their peers and community that ''Cyberbullying is not cool'' and lend support to victims, who may not realize that their social groups and the community-at-large do care about their well-being, both online and offline.

''It is encouraging that 61% of our youth surveyed in the Digi CyberSAFETM 2017 Survey are able to avoid placing themselves in a dangerous situation but when it comes to the number of youths that are equipped with digital resiliency skills - this number is still quite low,'' said Philip Ling, Programme Manager for Digi CyberSAFE.

''Nurturing digital resiliency (Be Smart) - what to do, how to react when faced with a cyberbullying incident and understanding and nurturing a sense of empathy towards others (Use Heart) remains a key objective of the Be Smart, Use Heart Video Challenge for this year. Through the contest, schoolchildren's peers and the community also gain a platform to listen to first hand thoughts and feelings from the perspective of young people when it comes to cyberbullying, what they see, their experiences as a victim or even if they have played the role of the bully.''

For this year's contest, students are encouraged to delve deeper into the issues related to cyberbullying. Judges will look out for how contestants express

  • Why cyberbullying continues to be a prevalent social issue
  • How and in what forms does cyberbullying happen in 2017
  • Effect on the victim, peers and community
  • Actions explored to support victim and show solidarity from peers and community (empathy) and show digital resiliency against cyberbullying
