DiGi engages Youth on environmental conservation At Eco Film Fest 2010
Proceeds from Eco-Sale Donated to Environmental Protection Society of Malaysia (EPSM)

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 OCTOBER 2010: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") and students from 10 local universities hosted the Yellow Green Shack bazaar last weekend; an eco-friendly recycling initiative encouraging the buying of previously owned goods. DiGi's support for the Eco Film Fest 2010 is part of the Company's commitment to engage with its external stakeholders to enhance environmental consciousness and together with them, help reduce its shared climate impact.

The garage sale style bazaar which was held on 16-17 October 2010 saw student participation from the following universities: UM, UIAM, UKM, UPM, UPSI, KTAR, MMU Cyberjaya, MMU Melaka, UiTM and UNITEN.

Students from each university set up booths to help find new owners for pre-loved items, which included both used goods and goods recycled into newer more useful and 'sellable' items. For example, participants sold new handbags and phone pouches created from donated jeans as well as cleaning detergents made from fruit and vegetable enzymes.

According to Vimal Kumar, DiGi's Head of Corporate Responsibility, the initiative was part of the company's commitment to address green issues by including youths in the action and conversation. "We understand that youths are integral to Malaysia's eco-future and took the opportunity to provide a platform for them to share and express their passion for environmental conservation."

She also said, when approached with the idea, the students were very enthusiastic to do their part in reducing wastage and pollution, using their creativity to convert or identify sellable used goods.

Avy Chong Yiu Ting, a participant from UPSI said, "We were very excited to be a part of this project and our team worked very hard, spending over two months sewing and refurbishing goods to sell. We understand the importance of recycling to save the environment; I think we did a great job together with the other universities and hope our collective donation will help further this cause."

Proceeds collected from the bazaar by university students amounted to over RM3,500 and will be donated to the Environmental Protection Society of Malaysia (EPSM).
