DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat ends on a high note
Jubinggo walks away as Champion with cash prizes & contract with talent agency
KUALA LUMPUR, 8 MAY 2011: Jubinggo from SMK Tengku Panglima Perang Tengku Mohammad, Kuantan walked away as the National Champion of the inaugural DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat secondary school programme, organised by DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") at Berjaya Times Square today.
The competition was designed to encourage a passion for the performing arts amongst secondary school-goers. It saw over 2,000 students from more than 200 schools in Malaysia participating in auditions and state competitions since 28 February 2011.
After eight weeks of intense competition, 14 winning teams across six states were qualified to showcase their music and dance talent at the grand finals today. "Jubinggo" of SMK Tengku Panglima Perang Tengku Mohammad from Kuantan emerged as the DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat champion. Clad in electric and colourful outifits, they wowed the judges and the crowd with their phenomenal acoustic performance to the tune of their original song.
"The Nurse" from SMK Seni, Johor Bahru and "Rejuvenate" from SMJK Kwang Hua, Klang, came in second and third respectively.
Jubinggo's team captain, Shaharin Bin Mohd Nor said, "This is an awesome feeling...we won! The other teams were amazing, too. Everyone on the team worked really hard as we love what we do. We couldn't have done it without the support of our guidance teacher and the support from our school."
Moharmustaqeem Mohammed, DiGi's Head of Segment Marketing said "We are very proud of our secondary school students. Up until today, they've done exceptionally well and we've seen that spark of creativity and excitement for performing arts, which drove us to create DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat in the first place.
"The great response we received from the schools and students throughout the Sekolahku Berbakat programme clearly proves that there is much talent to be cultivated among the youths in Malaysia. These kids showed us what they were really made of and we hope to continue creating relevant and unique experiences for them self-expression and talent development."
The event was judged by industry professionals Ray Redzuan, Aesar Mustafa, Farith Taib, Khoo Hsien Li from Universal Music Malaysia and Shamsuddin bin Redza, Assistant Director of Art Talent Unit from the Ministry of Education.
Sabri Abu Bakar from the Ministry of Education's Arts and Co-curriculum Division added, "DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat has proven to be a good platform for students to have a taste of what it's like to perform in a competitive environment. From this experience, the students have the opportunity to learn many life lessons that will help them to cope with challenges in the future, as arts and culture can instill soft skills in students to become well-balanced individuals."
Ray Redzuan concluded, "It was no easy task to pick which team deserves to win. The final 14 teams have been phenomenal and we had a hard time deciding. In the end, we finally chose "Jubinggo" from SMK Tengku Panglima Perang Tengku Mohammad because of their originality in their music composition and talented showmanship."
The National Champion Team received a cash prize of RM5,000 while their school received RM3,000 in cash. The team is also entitled to a 6-month talent management contract with Giant-Ants Talent Hub worth RM9,000, subject to parental/guardians' approval.
