17-year old YouTube singing sensation to show young hopefuls the way

SHAH ALAM, 28 February 2012 - DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") talent competition DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakat (DLSB) has selected teenage singing sensation on YouTube, Najwa Latif, as the face of DLSB 2012.

A school-based competition that runs from 5 March to 30 June, 2012, DLSB is focused on cultivating talent among 12 to 19 year olds by encouraging them to express themselves in a fun and creative way through music and dance. For this year's competition, another form of creative expression was added - stand-up comedy.

According to Roziyati Abdul Rahman, DiGi's Head of Campaign Management, "Being in the same age group with the participants and sharing similar love for music, we believe that Najwa will help to inspire and boost the students' confidence to showcase their talents at the competition."

"Last year, we saw fantastic participation from over 2,000 students from more than 2oo schools and we hope to attract even more for this year's round. DiGi Live Sekolahku Berbakatis an opportunity and platform for the students to exhibit their capabilities creatively, showcasing their interests, passion and talent on a national stage," she added.

DiGi is also introducing an online category for the first time, where interested students who are unable to attend the auditions or those who did not make it to the Zone Finals are allowed to submit their online video entries via the official website www.DiGi.com.my/DLSB from 5 March to 22 June 2012. The top three entries with the highest votes will qualify to compete in the National Final together with the other school finalists.

"Najwa Latif is a perfect example of how one can harness the power of the Internet to share one's passion and musical talent with Netizens. Her online success is a clear demonstration of how DiGi's mission to deliver Internet for All can be easily accomplished. If the content has the right appeal, sharing similar interests is no longer confined by geographical boundaries," explained Roziyati.

As the face of DLSB, Najwa will be one of the judges during the competition. She will also share some tips and tricks on how to be the next online sensation as well as the importance of balancing between studies and music. Participants and fans will also get to engage with Najwa via the DiGi Youths Facebook page.

Running from 5 March to 30 June, 2012, the DiGiLIVE Sekolahku Berbakat competition is open to all secondary school students. To join, students students may participate as a solo act or form teams of two to six members and register either with their respective schools or online at www.digi.com.my/DLSB for either one of the following four categories, namely singing (Vokal Glamer), band (Band Glamer), dance (Tari Glamer) and stand-up comedy (Lawak Glamer).

The stages of competition are as follows:

  • Auditions to be held in eight states, namely Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor
  • There are four Zone Finals after the Auditions to be held in Southern (Johor, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan), Central (Selangor & Kuala Lumpur), Eastern (Pahang), Northern (Penang & Perak).
  • 10 selected teams/solo acts from each zone will compete in their respective Zone Finals with the exception of Central zone that will have 30 teams/solo.
  • Top three Most Voted Online Entries via DiGi Youths Facebook will proceed to National Final as well.
  • Top two teams from each Zone Finals (except Central zone with 4 teams/solo) and Top three Most Voted Online Teams/Solo will proceed to the Grand Final held on 1 July 2012 in Klang Valley.

At each level of competition, the qualifying teams will be required to attend a camp featuring motivational training, grooming sessions, and rehearsals to prepare them for the Zone Final.
