Penang and Sabah first to enjoy DiGi's Turbo 3Gâ„¢ for mobile phone
Offering complete Internet solutions on PCs, laptops and mobile phones

SHAH ALAM, 22 OCTOBER 2009: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") today launched its 3G voice and data service in Penang and Sabah, making both states the first in Malaysia to experience DiGi's Turbo 3Gâ„¢ service for mobile phones.

Marking its entry into the mobile 3G space, DiGi immediately activated 200,000 existing subscribers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu on Turbo 3Gâ„¢. DiGi expects to have its entire subscriber base in these market centers on Turbo 3Gâ„¢ by the end of the year.

In May, DiGi launched its broadband service for personal computers (PCs) and laptops with a commitment to invest RM150million to roll out its Turbo 3Gâ„¢ mobile and broadband service in Penang and Sabah over the next three years. Since then, DiGi has expanded its population coverage to approximately 70% of Penang Island and 95% of Kota Kinabalu.

Johan Dennelind, chief executive officer of DiGi said, "This launch is a key milestone for DiGi as it marks our fulfillment to enable Turbo 3Gâ„¢ for mobile phones this year. We now have complete Internet solutions to customers both on big and small screens. Our strategy to launch Turbo 3Gâ„¢ on PCs and laptops first has allowed us to address gaps in the market and manage our network better. We have received positive reviews from customers on our broadband service particularly our better speeds for less proposition. We aim to emulate key learnings and apply it for 3G on mobile phones.

"We are seeing a shift in consumer behavior whereby more people are getting their first Internet experience on their mobile phones, hence it is key that we give them quality online service to spur usage," added Dennelind.

Determined to get 3G on mobile 'done right', DiGi is focusing on keeping its offer relevant and simple. Existing mobile customers will be progressively activated on Turbo 3Gâ„¢ without having to replace their SIM card or request for any further settings.

Two plans have been introduced to customers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu; the Internet Unlimited Max 5 tariff which gives all DiGi Prepaid customers unlimited Internet on their mobile phones for no more than RM5 a day, and the Internet Unlimited Monthly 58 plan for DiGi Postpaid customers which offers broadband optimised for the mobile phone at RM58 a month.

Riding on Malaysia's newest Turbo 3Gâ„¢ (14.4Mbps HSPA) network, as well as stable Internet connections on the widest EDGE network outside its Turbo 3Gâ„¢ coverage area, DiGi promises a consistent online experience on mobile phones. In addition to voice and video calls, DiGi subscribers in Penang and Kota Kinabalu can now enjoy a greater Internet experience when accessing emails, social networking services and various other online applications on the go.
