Winning postcard perfect entries land trip to Bangkok
DiGi treats winners to a discovery of city’s creative buzz

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 December 2007: The winners of Postcards, a programme under the banner of DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd's ("DiGi") platform for creative expression, Apostrophe, will attest that even the most commonplace daily events can be given a creative twist and bring about a rewarding outcome.

In this case, Charis Loke En-Ping, 16; Foo Wei Meng, 31; Grace Tham Hui Yee, 22; Syarifah Radziah bt Syed Khairuddin, 31; Tee Huey Shan, 22; and Temme Lee Wei Wei, 21, demonstrated their visual creative skills and for their efforts, they each received an all expense paid trip to soak in the rich arts scene of Bangkok, Thailand.

The six Postcards winners will enjoy a personalised creative "road trip", led by an arts insider. They will visit avant-garde art galleries and other hotspots of creativity in Bangkok while gaining unique perspectives from Malaysian and Thai artists residing in the city.

Apostrophe is DiGi's ongoing project to engage the community in cultivating creativity by connecting like-minded individuals through an arts platform which is largely run via the website www.apostrophegallery.com.

The Postcards programme focused on telling stories visually through postcard-sized images. Centred on the theme of 1.30pm, Postcardsparticipants were required to submit a postcard-sized image or series of no more than 5 postcard-sized images in any visual form, be it a photograph, sketch, painting or drawing.

Tunku Alizakri Alias, DiGi's Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs said, "With Postcards, it was all about telling a story through a visual medium. We wanted participants to view the world around them literally through different lenses. The test then was to succinctly capture and narrate their story via a work of art no bigger than a postcard."

"We received more than 1,000 entries and the quality of the works submitted was exceptional, which made the task of shortlisting the finalists and winners a real challenge for the evaluating panel," he added.

Like previous Apostrophe programmes, Postcards was supported by 'Expression Sessions', a series of free workshops facilitated by the programme's mentors, each well-established in the visual arts field.

The Postcards mentors were writer, photographer, actress and filmmaker Bernice Chauly; photographer Eiffel Chong; visual artist Gabrielle Bates; photographer Sharon Lam and visual artist Tan Sei Hon.

"As a platform for creativity, Apostrophe encourages vibrant ideas. Our Expression Sessions are conducive for like-minded individuals to explore, connect and share this creativity. At the same time, participants are guided by these mentors , who themselves are known specialists in their respective fields of the creative arts," explained Alizakri.

The entries were evaluated by a panel comprising Tunku Alizakri, who represented DiGi and the five mentors. The top 12 entries short-listed by the panel were then interpreted as unique installation art pieces and displayed at today's showcase in addition to being profiled on the Apostrophe website. The six winning entries were selected from the short-listed submissions.

The six winners also won a Sony Ericsson K800i mobile phone each.

Alizakri added, "Apostrophe echoes DiGi's brand values of simplicity, innovation and est value as it's a uniquely innovative platform to develop creative talent through unconventional programmes that are easily accessible to anyone who wishes to participate."

"We hope that all who do participate in Apostrophe's programmes will walk away with a creative experience that has not only enriched them; but also spurred them to raise the bar and stretch the boundaries of their creativity," he concluded.
