More than 120 underprivileged children display their artistic talents on animal sculptures

Kuala Lumpur, January 29, 2005 - Leading mobile communications service provider, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd specially invited more than 120 underprivileged children to participate in the fanfare of Chinese New Year celebrations called DiGi's Celebration of Peace and Prosperity at Berjaya Times Square.

Amid the thundering sounds of drums and clashing of cymbals, and dancing lions, these special youngsters sat down together with DiGi volunteers comprising of staff from DiGi's Marketing Division to shape, sculpt and mould the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The children of Gurpuri Children's Shelter Home, Rumah Bakti, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Angels, Ti-Ratan Home, Persatuan Rumah Kebajikan Rita, Cempaka Welfare Home, Maranatha Apostolic Church, Rumah Kebajikan Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Al-Khairiah, Rumah Kids, Chrestus Home, House of Joy and Educare Centre used a variety of materials, including used bulbs, plastic tubes, wire and wool.

These specially designed animal sculptures were sold to DiGi's business partners such as Digimerge (M) Sdn Bhd, Nex One Sdn Bhd, Prepaid Solution Sdn Bhd, Sky Mobile Sdn Bhd, Top Plus Distribution Sdn Bhd, Flexi Promotion (M) Sdn Bhd, Unrealmind Interactive Sdn Bhd, Sky & Land Media Group Sdn Bhd, Alan Dick & Co. Sdn Bhd, MW Media (M) Sdn Bhd, Percetakan Tenaga and Axalto (M) Sdn Bhd at RM1,000 per piece. The proceeds from the sale will go towards fulfilling the homes' needs.

The event was led by DiGi's Marketing Division and its spokesperson, Mr Chan Nam Kiong, General Manager of Sales, Marketing said that DiGi is pleased to organise the Chinese New Year festivities for their young special guests. "Chinese New Year is the most important event in the Chinese Lunar calendar where it brings people together to share in the warmth and traditional aspects of ushering in the New Year. As a company that is committed to the community, we feel it's important to include these kids in our celebrations during this festive season and at the same time, give them an avenue to be creative," said Mr Chan.

Commenting on DiGi's corporate social responsibilities, Mr Chan also said that DiGi has comprehensive community programmes where the company is delighted to work with underprivileged children to preserve our traditions and cultural heritage. "Our investment is in the children where we create programmes that are both educational and enriching. DiGi's Celebration of Peace and Prosperity is one community programme that enables the children to learn more about their own culture and traditions, as well as to bring out their artistic talents when they develop the 12 animal zodiacs," explained Mr Chan.

Under the guidance of Bernard Goh, artistic director of the Hands Percussion Team, the children were also treated to Chinese dance and drum performances as they worked. The grand finale saw the children together with DiGi volunteers proudly present their animal sculptures to DiGi's business partners.

"Our business partners' support in DiGi's Celebration of Peace and Prosperity is very much appreciated. Their involvement in our Chinese New Year programme strongly demonstrates that they share the same ideals and vision as us in giving back to the community," said Mr Chan.

After a fun-filled afternoon, the children received ang pow packets along with tickets to watch the popular children's show, The Polar Express, sponsored by IMAX Theatre. In addition to the children's activity of developing 12 zodiacs, several booths were set up where shoppers could dress up in Chinese costumes, have their pictures taken via multimedia messaging services (MMS) sponsored by Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd; and have their caricatures drawn. The public could also try their hand at lantern-making and other Chinese craft activities.

DiGi's Celebration of Peace and Prosperity which comes under the DiGi Yellow Mobile umbrella, is a two-day event ending on 30 January 2005.
