DiGi restores services
Traffic diverted to alternative links

SHAH ALAM, 29 December 2006: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd has successfully restored communications links to all countries affected by the damaged undersea cables.

DiGi's Head of Network Planning, Abdul Karim Fakir bin Ali, said, "We have fully re-established links to the United States, China and Korea. Our customers can resume using IDD, roaming and SMS services involving these countries."

However, efforts are ongoing to restore SMS to the US while SMS from the US has been restored.

Links to Taiwan was re-established this afternoon but with delayed experience.

"DiGi wishes to thank customers for their patience as services involving these countries will be slow due to heavy congestion resulting from reduced and limited capacity of the communications network in Asia," Abdul Karim said.

DiGi is working non-stop to seek more routes to ease the congestion. "We also leverage our global Telenor network for this," Abdul Karim said.

Abdul Karim also said DiGi's EDGE subscribers can expect services to improve by tonight as the company is leasing additional capacity to support Internet access. Access to .com.my sites is restored while work is ongoing to restore access to .com websites.

Tuesday night's earthquake in Taiwan damaged undersea telecommunications cables, disrupting Internet traffic, roaming services in and international calls to some countries.

DiGi immediately worked with its transit providers to reduce disruption by rerouting traffic pending full repairs to telecommunications infrastructure in Taiwan.

Abdul Karim said DiGi has been keeping its customers updated on the situation via SMS, the call centre and digi.com.my website.

DiGi has also restored services to most of the areas affected by the floods in the southern states. "Our people have been working round the clock to repair damaged base stations and provide generators to power them," said Abdul Karim.

Abdul Karim added, "We apologise to our customers for the service disruption caused by the two natural disasters."
