DiGi rewards outstanding journalism
Utusan Malaysia journalist awarded DiGi Journalist of the Year
KUALA LUMPUR, 28 November 2006: One of Utusan Malaysia's journalists, Khairunnisa Sulaiman, walked away with a cash prize of RM15,000 at the DiGi Journalist of the Year Award ceremony last night.
Khairunnisa and her article "Teleperubatan Telefon Bimbit" emerged main award recipient at the presentation ceremony, which carried a purse of RM10,000. In addition to that, she picked up the first prize of RM5,000 in the Print Journalism for Newspaper (Bahasa Malaysia) category.
"The DiGi Journalist of the Year Award has been instrumental in improving the standard of reporting in the telco industry. The recognition and encouragement that the Award accords the journalism fraternity has led to evident year-on-year growth in both the level and quality of entries," said Tunku Alizakri Bin Raja Muhamad Alias, DiGi's Head of Corporate Affairs.
The second prize in Khairunnisa's category went to Mohd Ridzwan Md Iman (Utusan Malaysia) and third prize to Khairul Anuar Abdul Samad (Berita Harian).
The first prize in the Print Journalism for Newspaper (English) category was awarded to Goh Thean Eu from New Straits Times while second and third prizes went to colleagues Aimie Masniza Ahmad Pardas and Muhamad Hazimin Sulaiman respectively.
Predeeben Kannan received a Special Merit Award in the Print Journalism for Magazines category, for his article published in Smart Investor magazine.
This year's judging was led by Dato' Halim Shafie, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Datuk Azman Ujang, Chairman of Malaysian Press Institute, as chief judge for technology and chief judge for journalism respectively.
Other panel members were Rosli Abdul Shukor, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications, En. Kamil Ahmad Othman, Vice-President, Creative Multimedia, Multimedia Development Corporation and Dr. Ewe Hong Tat, Dean of Faculty of Information Technology, Multimedia University.
DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd launched its Journalist of the Year Award in 2000 on World Telecommunications Day to encourage journalists to strive for the highest standards of professionalism and recognise the contribution to the growth of the telecommunications industry.
"It is evident that the assimilation of technology journalism into mainstream journalism has taken a stronghold on Malaysian media. The scope by which technology journalism is assessed has broadened as we recognize the growing currency of technology," Tunku Alizakri added.
The ceremony also marked the final instalment of the DiGi Journalist of the Year Award.
"We are proud that the Award's original objective of contributing to this growth in technology journalism has been achieved," said Tunku Zakri.
